Pitfall

I can’t help but drown in disbelief

As I struggle to fathom the implausibility of your actions

Taking every misstep possible to reach the end

But each failure results in a new notch in your rope

Hope is swept from underneath your feet

Gasping for breath as desperation cinches tighter around your throat

Claw away in futile efforts to change the outcome, it won’t make a difference

No matter how much you struggle, I refuse to say your name

Even as you beckon with flailing legs and panicked irises

I won’t succumb to such a pitfall of absurdity

Or a noose that was fashioned for me.

Author’s Words for Thought

“Kindness and intelligence don’t always deliver us from the pitfalls and traps: there are always failures of love, of will, of imagination.  There is no way to take the danger out of human relationships.” –Barbara Grizzuti Harrison
