Liar

Expose the lies from within

A charlatan hiding behind the guise

Lying to both the world and himself

The truth resides somewhere deeper,

But will it remain buried beneath?

Continue to bask in the delusion,

Deceiving yourself about my misgivings

Peace is but a misguided virtue

As I convince everyone that everything is fine
Even as I take note of the times I survived

Only to curse at the thought of facing another sunrise
Expose the lies from within

A charlatan hiding behind the guise

Lying to both the world and himself

I’m confronted by a maze of obscurity, reaping what I have sewn

Every second of every day brings me pain

Wishing that the world would take notice
And that this wasn’t my burden to bear

I can’t stand to listen to my heartbeat
As this telltale heart reminds me of the failures I refuse to face

At least they’ll know

I confronted every sunrise and gasped with every breath
Staying preoccupied,

Lest my thoughts overtake rationality
But in the end I realize my failures will consume me yet again.

Author’s Words for Thought

“Have you ever attempted a homolinguistic translation? “Translate” a favorite short poem, English to English. Substitute words with synonyms, similar phrases, or just by capturing the general sense of a line until an entirely unique poem emerges.” I guess this doubles as a writing prompt and poem, but instead of a traditional poem I decided to take the lyrics from one of my favorite songs, “Witness” by the band Counterparts. Enjoy!
